Throughout the Diocese of Portland, beginning in September 2015, every child preparing to receive Reconciliation, Confirmation and First Eucharist must complete a two-year sacrament preparation process that includes the involvement of parents/guardians. This will provide children with the time needed to learn about and develop a relationship with Jesus, to learn their prayers, to understand and desire the sacraments, and to be involved in the church through participation at Sunday Mass. As parents/guardians, you play the most important role in passing on the faith to your children. We invite you and will help you to be actively involved in preparing your child for the sacraments and providing them with a foundation to live a life of faith.
We will offer 5 parent/child retreats in each year of preparation focusing on the following themes to help you in passing on the Catholic faith to your children and to live as a Catholic household in today's world:
Session Themes - Year 1
Session Themes - Year 2
- Why Does Jesus Matter? Believing and Belonging?
- Hearing God in Scripture
- The Power of the Sacraments
- Personal and Family Prayer
- Following Jesus as a Family
- Forgiving One Another
- Sacrament of Reconciliation
- The Holy Spirit and You!
- Sacrament of Confirmation
- Jesus, the Bread of Life
- Celebrating the Eucharist
The minimum age for a child registering in Year 1 of the Sacramental Preparation program is 6 years old entering the first grade. Of course, we will have age-appropriate catechesis for children who are in elementary school, middle school, and high school in both years of the sacramental preparation program as long as there are children/youth in these age groups.
Those who complete the first year of the Sacramental Preparation program can register in the second year of the Sacramental Preparation program at one of our Sacramental Preparation parent information meetings. Youth will be required to attend the first year of the Sacramental Preparation program before they can register in the second year.
The Sacramental Preparation program is supplemental to your child's regular faith formation, whether that is received through your parish's faith formation or youth ministry program, or through your child's Catholic school, or from you through home-schooling. So, your child must be enrolled in either your parish's faith formation program, a Catholic school, or home-schooled using a curriculum approved by your parish's catechetical leader.
To register your child for the Sacramental Prep program, please contact one of our Cluster's Parish Catechetical Leaders:
