FAITH FACTS: The word "Christ" comes from a Greek translation of the Hebrew term "Messiah." This title of Jesus means the "anointed of God."

WEEKLY REFLECTION

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

"When you are invited, go and take the lowest place so that when the host comes to you he may say, 'My friend, move up to a higher position.' For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted." - Lk 14:10ab, 11

Have you ever given someone something or helped someone in their time of need and then later complained that they did not seem to appreciate what you had done for them? Such a feeling is a sign that what you did was really for yourself and no thanks is deserved. When we give, it should not be in order to receive a reward of any kind – not even gratitude. We are only doing what we should as good disciples. In fact, the more quietly and anonymously we can help others the better. We should never make anyone feel indebted to us. How freely do you give to others?

Dear Saint Max 2010 First Communion Families,

What better way to get to know who is sitting next to you in the pew each week – here’s a way to finally put a name to a face! We are putting together a cluster directory, our parish family directory won’t be complete without you and your family in it - Please sign up today! Photo sessions are filling up. Every family that participates will get their own free parish directory.

Photographers from Olan Mills will be at St. Max September 14th – 15th, and September 22nd – 25th. Gather your family together, and book a date for a free family photo. The option to purchase additional photo packages will also be offered – so here’s a great opportunity to get the Christmas family Photo card done too! Registration is easy – you may either sign up after mass at the table in the narthex or on-line by following these simple steps:

1.      http://signup.olanmills.com

2.      Select “New appointment Schedule new appointment”/enter

3.      On left: enter church phone number 207-883-0334, on Right, enter your photography/church member information/enter

4.      Above the calendar, click on the month that you’d like, then choose the day and the time slot./enter

If you would like to have your photo taken, but none of the St. Max dates work for you, there’s good news! You may go to any of the cluster parishes, and may also register on-line. Here are the photography dates of the other cluster parishes:

St. Bartholomew:  9/28 – 10/2. PH:  207-799-5528

St. Johns: 9/7 – 9/11. PH: 207-772-7489

Note: you may follow the steps above for on-line sign up, however, in step 3, you must enter the corresponding parish phone number.

If you would be so kind as to forward this e-mail onto your Saint Max friends, and encourage them to sign up too that would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Karen

To help encourage parents and supporters to spread the word of our great school to friends, neighbors and acquaintances, we are happy to introduce a Referral Program. Under this program, any current member of Holy Cross School or Holy Cross Church, or our cluster churches, St. John’s, St. Bartholomew and St. Maximilian Kolbe, who refers a family that subsequently enrolls their child(ren) in Holy Cross School (Grades Pre-K--8) will receive a check for $200. For more information call the school at 799-6661.

Holy Cross School Summer Hours: There will be someone in the school office most mornings over the summer if you need to get in touch with the school. Please leave a message if you don’t reach someone and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

CYCLES OF FAITH

Twenty-Second Sunday in

 Ordinary Time

Are you planning a cookout next weekend? Many people use the Labor Day holiday as an opportunity for an end of the summer celebration. The grocery stores will have special sales this week in an effort to entice people to stock up for the holiday weekend. Are you a union member who will be going to a large labor picnic? Or will it just be the family getting together, maybe at the beach or a lake cottage for a final summer plunge in the water? In any event, we all probably have a pretty good idea of who will be at our tables. It's unlikely that there will be uninvited guests-except for the ants or mosquitoes that seem to plague any outdoor event this time of year.

In the Gospel today Jesus lays down the challenge of who should be invited to the banquet. The poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind are the ones that are on his guest list. These were the individuals who were often excluded from society in Jesus' time. They were the folks that were on the fringe. Today, there are righteous people who have made a point of welcoming the unwanted. They've taken literally the message of the Gospel, and have gone out of their way to invite to dinner the homeless or the poor.

There are many who exercise a very concrete response to Jesus' call through their support of a meal program or food pantry, whether they donate food, or their time, or cash to support the good work. We tend to think of the poor at Thanksgiving or Christmas, times when we're often more generous toward those in need. But with back-to-school costs right now, many families are suffering. It may not be possible to invite someone who is hungry or poor to your cookout next weekend, but you can still help them through a gift to a charity that feeds the hungry

If you like to sing, want to find some new friends, and are 6-14 years old, you might want to think about joining the Young People's Choir of St. Maximilian Kolbe Church. What used to be known as Children's Choir, is now renamed to “Young People's Choir” to invite the older singers and friends to join. Our choir practices are going to be held on Tuesdays, from 4-5 PM in the Music Room, #7. Our first practice is going to be on September 21, 2010. Please drop off and pick up your child at the side door near Highland Avenue.

Please, contact Kathy Sparda if you are interested. Come and join a wonderful singing group of friends. Young People's Choir is going to sing on Saturdays' 4:30 Masses, twice in a month.

FOOD CUPBOARD: Each year we help families with children, with school supplies. We know this helps them as many have asked us if we are going to have them this year. Well, we do have them but need more. Stores are advertising these supplies at very low prices, so in lieu of canned foods, we are asking for backpacks, notebooks, pens, etc. Please help.

                                                 BOOK SALE!

The Columbiettes will hold a Book Sale on the weekend of October 16th to raise funds in support of parish needs.
