“STEWARDSHIP  -- A Disciple’s Way of Life!”

“Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed,” Jesus tells us in the Gospel this weekend, “and nothing hidden that will not become known.” May our stewardship of God’s gifts be such that we would not be ashamed if it were seen in the clear light of day.

(From Stewardship By The Book, by Sharon Hueckel.  Used with permission.)

Commentary:

I once worked for a man who had a rather pragmatic sense of ethics: “Never do or say anything you would not want to show up on the front page of the newspaper.” While not on a par with the Golden Rule, this advice does have merit. Our Catholic faith teaches that the “front page” will be the Last Judgment. All our good works will be revealed, even the good we did for others without even being aware of it; and all our sins and failings will be there, too. Of all the reasons to be a good steward, impressing others at the Last Judgment may be the least important; but if it gets some people started toward stewardship as a way of life, then it has value.

FAITH FACTS: Catholic and Protestant Bibles both include 27 books in the New Testament. Protestant Bibles have only 39 books in the Old Testament, however, while Catholic Bibles have 46. The seven books included in Catholic Bibles are Tobit, Judith, 1 and 2 Maccabees, Wisdom, Sirach, and Baruch. Catholic Bibles also include sections in the Books of Esther and Daniel which are not found in Protestant Bibles. These books are called the deuterocanonical books. The Catholic Church considers these books to be inspired by the Holy Spirit.

WEEKLY REFLECTION: 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reflect on the fact that God knows us more intimately than we know ourselves and continues to love and care for us. We have no secrets from God. How does it make you feel knowing you are loved so unconditionally? How might the realization of God’s love for you affect how you see others?

Every hair on your head has been counted;

so do not be afraid of anything.

~Matthew 10:30

THINGS TO PONDER:

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

He said, “My son, the battle is between two ‘wolves’ inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

MISSION BASKET FOR JUNE

The Archdiocese for the Military Services is responsible for the spiritual welfare of Catholics serving in our Armed Forces, their family members, patients in VA Medical Centers and U.S. Government personnel serving overseas – a total of more than 1.5 million souls! We receive no financial support from the U.S. Government and must rely on donations from the Catholic Community to provide pastoral care to our faithful members.

We need to increase the number of priests to serve Catholics in the military, and encourage young men to pursue a priestly vocation for all our dioceses through Discernment Weekends. Last year we had more than 70 young participate in such spiritual seminars.

In the meantime, we have developed and implemented a ministry entitled Catholics Seeking Christ (CSC) .CSC is a young adult peer-to-peer ministry designed to “keep the Faith alive” among our young Catholic military members when there is no priest available to them. Maintaining spiritual sustenance for our military members is essential, but these ministries are not inexpensive. Please be as generous as you can. Thank You!

CYCLES

OF FAITH

12th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Are you familiar with the term "conundrum"? By definition, it means a paradoxical, insoluble, or difficult problem-a dilemma. Many high school and college students probably think their mathematics exams are filled with conundrums! Such difficult problems can lead to the fear of getting the wrong answer; in turn, this fear can lead to a sort of paralysis, where no answer at all seems better than potentially being right.

Jesus offers a difficult problem to his disciples in today's Gospel reading from Matthew. In it, he tells them (and us) to fear only two things: the one who can kill both body and soul; and the Lord. But do we live our lives in fear? Absolutely not, because the fear of the Lord that Jesus speaks of is really a call for us to proclaim the love of God from the very depths of our souls no matter the reaction we may receive. It is our cross to bear.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us that there are seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord (CCC 1831). Receiving these gifts allows us to complete and make perfect all of the virtues we have, and gives us the opportunity to cleanse our minds and easily accept the word of God. With these gifts, we will never again face truly difficult problems alone.

CENTERING PRAYER will take place every Friday at 9:00 AM in the Library. Come for group meditation. All are welcome. FMI, Ann Howard, 767-4477.
