WEEKLY REFLECTION
21st
Sunday in Ordinary Time

Do you feel that by
going to church on Sunday, following all the rules, and donating to worthy causes
that you have done your part? Perhaps, all your “goodness” even makes you feel
superior to others. Over and over again, Jesus has warned us that the important
thing is what is in our hearts. Being a “good churchgoing Christian” is
meaningless without a genuine love and respect for others that leads us to
serve and help those around us.
Jesus passed through towns and villages, teaching as he went and making
his way to Jerusalem. Someone asked him, "Lord, will only a few people be
saved?" He answered them, "Strive to enter through the narrow
gate." - Lk 13:22-24a

FAITH FACTS: On Friday, August 27th, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast day of Saint Monica. Monica was born of a Christian family in Africa in 331. She married Patricius, a man hostile to the Christian faith, and had 3 children. Their oldest child was Augustine, who rejected the faith and lived a pagan lifestyle. Through Monica's virtuous life and her many prayers to God for their conversion she lived to see both her husband and son embrace the faith. Augustine became a Doctor of the Church and a Saint. A Prayer to Saint Monica: Exemplary Mother of the great Augustine, you perseveringly pursued your wayward son not with wild threats but with prayerful cries to heaven. Intercede for all mothers in our day so that they may learn to draw their children to God. Teach them how to remain close to their children, even the prodigal sons and daughters who have sadly gone astray. Amen.

CYCLES OF FAITH
Twenty-First Sunday in
Ordinary Time
In my
travels I've visited cities like Washington, New York, and Chicago. And while
I'm mostly a country person at heart, there is a certain vibrancy in city life.
I like walking down the crowded streets of a shopping or entertainment district
and watching the people. I suppose I enjoy it, because it is so different from
the country road that I usually walk down in the early morning. If I'm taking
an evening walk in the city, I'm always intrigued by the long lines that form
outside certain clubs. You can hear the thumping of the music, and see the
flashing of the lights. As I walk by, the waiting crowd is often trying to
convince the bouncers guarding the doors that they know someone on the inside
who would surely let them in if the person only knew they were out on the
sidewalk. From my cursory observance, the pleading patrons are almost never
admitted.
It
is probably not fair to compare the kingdom of heaven to the big city club
scene, even though people come from the east and the west, the north and the
south, to get in on a Saturday night. Like the clubs, the kingdom of God does
have an exclusive clientele, and you do have to know someone to get in-and he
has to know you.
We
get to know Jesus by spending time with him through prayer and by reading the
Bible. We get to know him even better by our communion with him when we receive
the Eucharist. And we get to know Jesus when we discover him in the hungry, the
thirsty, the homeless, the stranger, the sick, and the imprisoned. There's not
a line stretching around the corner to meet these kinds of people. But maybe
there should be. If we want to get in to the best place ever, then we're going
to have to line up to help these least ones.
FOOD CUPBORD: Each year we help families with children, with school supplies. We know
this helps them as many have asked us if we are going to have them this year.
Well, we do have them but need more. Stores are
advertising these supplies at very low prices, so in lieu of canned foods,
we are asking for backpacks, notebooks, pens, etc. Please help.
AWAKEN
YOUR MARRIAGE: One couple, who recently went on a Worldwide Marriage
Encounter weekend, summed up their experience like this, “The weekend awakened
our marriage and we are living [it] in a more conscious way!” In just 44 hours
you can renew and enrich your marriage … you don’t need it, you deserve it!
Mark your calendars and plan now to join us this September 24-26. The
registration costs $50 and there is an opportunity for a free will offering on the
weekend. The weekend will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn, Portland (Jetport).

BAPTISM SPONSORS
If
Catholic parents take their faith seriously, one of the more important tasks
they will face is choosing sponsors for their child’s baptism. Commonly
referred to as godparents, sponsors really act as role models of faith for a
child, helping parents instill the values of the Gospel in their child. Too
often the choice of sponsors has little to do with faith and more to do with
friends or family – almost a “whose turn is it” mentality. Sponsors need to be
active witnesses of faith, giving each child the best possible example to
follow as they grow in their love and understanding of God.
At least one Godparent needs to be a faithful practicing Catholic and be registered in a parish, obtaining a “Sponsor Form for Baptism” before the child is baptized. If coming from out of town or state, a written letter from the parish priest, giving his permission, must be obtained.
WORSHIP & SPIRITUALITY
Twenty- First Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Narrow Door
1st Reading: Isaiah (gathering of the nations)
2nd Reading: Hebrews (the discipline of God)
Gospel: Luke: Jesus answers the questions that all should strive to enter through the narrow gate with an explanation. Does it mean only a few may enter? Any number of people can enter a narrow gate but one does so deliberately. The narrow gate is discipleship.
A choice.
Questions to ponder:
Ø What words in the gospel and in the Isaiah reading offer hope?
Ø In what ways is choosing discipleship a narrow gate?
Ø What do you think Jesus means by, “Some are last who will be first?”
Ø What daily choices are you making that will allow you to be recognized at the doorway of the reign of God?
Ø What good habits are you practicing in order to be a good Christian?
