FAITH FACTS: In today's Gospel Jesus tells
His disciples to "ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for
His harvest." Let us take Christ's command to heart and pray for vocations
in our diocese. "O Lord, send workers for your harvest, so that the Gospel
of your Only-Begotten Son may always be proclaimed and His sacrifice be
everywhere renewed. Look with favor upon your family, the Church, and ever
increase her numbers. Enable her to lead her sons and daughters to the holiness
to which they are called and to work for the salvation of others. Through
Christ Our Lord. Amen (Prayer by Holiness

WEEKLY REFLECTION: 11th
Sunday in Ordinary Time
We like to keep count of things – who owes us, points we have earned, etc. We even do this with our faith – how well have we followed the “rules” and maybe even how many indulgences have we earned. The truth is, that such careful “accounting” is fruitless and even a distraction from what is truly important. We cannot “earn” salvation – this is a gift Jesus has given to us and we did not even ask for it! In light of this, why are we keeping count of what is owed to us and what we have earned?
Know that the Lord is God;
he made us, his we are.
~Psalm 100:2
“STEWARDSHIP -- A
Disciple’s Way of Life!”
In this weekend’s Gospel, Jesus sends out the disciples to meet the needs of others. His admonition to them is the same challenge He makes to us: “The gift you have received, give as a gift.”
(From
Stewardship By The Book, by Sharon
Hueckel. Used with permission.)
Commentary:
One of the leaders in
stewardship as a way of life in our Diocese explains his approach to stewardship
this way: “Everything we have is a gift from God. The day is coming when God is
going to ask each of us, ‘What did you do with all the gifts I have given you?’
I want to have the right answer.” And so should we all.

At the end of May 2008, a total of $441,215.00 has been received from pledges from the Capital Campaign. The balance of the loan is currently at $611,633.00. A total of $782,881.00 has been applied to the principal on the loan from the pledges received; from the sale of St. Jude’s; and from the sale of the property and building adjourning the church. We want to thank all those whose generosity continues to support our parish building and programs.
The Archdiocese for the Military Services is responsible
for the spiritual welfare of Catholics serving in our Armed Forces, their
family members, patients in VA Medical Centers and U.S. Government personnel
serving overseas – a total of more than 1.5 million souls! We receive no
financial support from the U.S. Government and must rely on donations from the
Catholic Community to provide pastoral care to our faithful members.
We
need to increase the number of priests to serve Catholics in the military, and
encourage young men to pursue a priestly vocation for all our dioceses through
Discernment Weekends. Last year we had more than 70 young participate in such
spiritual seminars.
In
the meantime, we have developed and implemented a ministry entitled Catholics Seeking Christ (CSC) .CSC is a
young adult peer-to-peer ministry designed to “keep the Faith alive” among our
young Catholic military members when there is no priest available to them.
Maintaining spiritual sustenance for our military members is essential, but
these ministries are not inexpensive.
Please be as
generous as you can. Thank You!

CYCLES
OF FAITH
11th Sunday in Ordinary Time
How often have you heard the
phrase "ordinary people doing extraordinary things"? Our history is
filled with such people, and all around us you can see them today. There are
the doctors and nurses who routinely save lives; teachers who shoulder most of
the responsibility of educating our young people; or even the thousands of
people who participate in countless fundraising events to try to help eradicate
deadly diseases. Their calling comes from within.
Today's Gospel reading from Matthew tells of Jesus' act
of selecting his twelve disciples. So filled with compassion at the sight of
thousands of people who came to hear his word, he prayed for and received
"shepherds for the flocks." But in the same vein as his humble
beginnings, Jesus did not seek those who spoke with authority of the orthodox
laws, but rather his disciples were ordinary men called to do the most
extraordinary thing.
Would you answer such a call? We have, in fact, already
been called! The apostles handed down the gift of love in Christ, a treasure we
are entrusted with to pass down to our children and everywhere in the world
open to God's word (CCC 3). If we turn to God with all of the trust and faith
promised by Jesus and delivered through the Holy Spirit, we have made real the
kingdom of heaven. What an extraordinary accomplishment!

What is a Father?
A Father can be big or small,
fat or thin, jolly or solemn, but is always someone to love and look up to.
A father has broad shoulders
to sit on when a parade is passing by and strong arms for tossing small
children in the air.
A father has pockets with
money that jingles, and sometimes he can be persuaded to use it on treats like
candy or bubble gum.
A father likes football on
TV, a clean house, children on his knee, outdoors, barbecue grills and Mom.
A father can mend a toy, read
a story to his children, fix a leaky faucet, and open jars easily.
A father knows the answer to
questions like, “Why is the sky blue?” and “Where does the sun go at night?”
In the eyes of his children,
a father is everything wonderful – he is security and understanding and loyalty
and love, and no moment of the day is happier than when someone shouts, “Dad’s
home!”

The Compassion of Jesus

Gospel: Matthew (the compassion of Jesus; the mission of the Twelve)
Key Passage: Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment.
In today’s gospel, we hear a shift in Matthew’s focus. The second part has Jesus preaching to the disciples about his mission.
Thoughts to Ponder: What specific words in the first reading and the gospel show God’s care for us? How does the Gospel fulfill the promise of the first reading? How do you experience God’s providential care, God’s “shepherding” in your life?
Adult: What responsibility do you have to the less
fortunate, and how actively are you meeting it?
Child: In what way can
you be more generous to others this week?
