WEEKLY REFLECTION
Fourteenth
Sunday in Ordinary Time

We do not grow in our
discipleship by ourselves. When Jesus sent the disciples out, he sent them two
by two. No Matter where we are in life, we always have a need for others who
are also committed to this journey. We need to have someone who can work with
us and share the load. We need someone to help us see more clearly what we are
being called to do and get us back on track when we start to wander. Do you
have someone who you can talk to about your journey?
"Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set
before you, cure the sick in it and say to them, 'The kingdom of God is at hand
for you.'"

HAVE A FAMILY PORTRAIT TAKEN FOR
FREE, GET A FREE DIRECTORY!
When is the last time you had a formal family
portrait taken? When is the last time that you went to church and knew all the
people by name and face sitting around you in the pew? If it's been a while,
and you know you don't know everyone at church - here's an idea: Get shot! St.
Max and the parish cluster are putting together a directory, and we want the
entire parish community to be featured in it.
Please participate! It's an opportunity to get a
free family portrait in exchange for having your family photo in the directory;
at last, you and others will be able to put a name to face, face to name and
we'll get to know each other better!!
Sign up is easy. You may sign up, on-line, by
doing the following steps:
1.
http://signup.olanmills.com <http://signup.olanmills.com/
2.
Select: Schedule New Appointment/enter
3.
Enter church phone number (207) 883-0334 on left, Enter photographer and church
member information on right./enter
4.
Choose either August or September to see available days for photo sessions.
5.
Schedule your time.
The ideal would be to have every
family/couple/individual in this directory. So, give it your best shot -
schedule your appointment, spread the word, and smile for the camera. Once you
have signed up on-line, please spread this e-mail and get your friends and
family members to sign up too. Time is critical for reaching families that have
kids in college - the best photo session times for them are likely in August.
Spread the word!
We're
also looking for volunteers to help during the photo sessions - we are looking
for people to do the following:
1.
Do reminder phone calls two days before the session.
2.
Serve as host/sign-in person during each of the photo sessions.
Anyone interested in helping in either way, may e-mail me:
krvachon@earthlink.net. FMI contact
Karen Vachon 730-2664. Thank you for your help.

FOOD CUPBOARD: We were honored on Thursday to be presented a $500 donation
from the Saco Biddeford South Portland Bank and a
$650 proceeds from the 5K run held recently
by Sean Griffin, Scarborough Key Club, Sean's donation is to be
used for our summer children's breakfast program. What a help this
is to us. We are seeing more and more new visitors and our food costs
have risen greatly. This past month we shared food with 448 men, women
and children.
We were donated 60
watermelons, courtesy of Troy Andrews, Maine Native Produce. Boy, did
they go fast, as we had 58 families; were they ever excited!
We are looking forward to a
huge crowd on the 8th as The Good Shepherd Food Bank will be showcasing their
new mobile van and giving away food in the parking lot behind St. John's. We
greatly miss the weekly arrival of our Holy Cross students; they were such
a help and a joy to know. So, if you have any young children who have
time to help, we would love to have them help from 8:30 -11:30 on Thursday
mornings.
We also need a volunteer to
pick up food @ SP Hannaford in Millcreek on Friday mornings @ 7:30 AM for July
and August. Please call 874-0379.
CYCLES
OF FAITH
14th Sunday in Ordinary Time
There were many little
incidents that led up to the Revolutionary War. Open-ended warrants, taxation
without representation, the Stamp Act requiring fees on newspapers and other
printed matter, and the quartering of troops in private homes are just a few
examples of actions the colonists objected to in the two decades before the
start of the war. In itself, no single event is seen as the definitive cause
for the revolution. But the cumulative effect of the grievances-most outlined
in the Declaration of Independence-saw many in the colonies rise up against the
British, whose army, once thought of as protectors, was now thought of as an
occupying force. Those whom we call patriots today, were thought by some of
their fellow citizens to be rabble-rousers and criminals. History has a way of
sorting things out.
In today's Gospel, Jesus
sends his disciples out to announce the kingdom of God. This was not a move for
political power (though some saw it that way) or even for earthly success. It
was not even so much a rebellion against the past as a fulfillment of promises
made by God long ago. "The kingdom of God is at hand for you," the disciples
proclaimed.
The message of Jesus has lasted far longer than nations or kingdoms. Christ is not allied with any government or political faction. God's kingdom exists apart from any political boundaries or human limitations. As Christians, we recognize our responsibility to seek justice and peace. Our calling is to promote the common good, even at the expense of our own self-interest. While we celebrate independence, we also understand that liberty does not mean unfettered license to do what we please. The kingdom of God is not so much a place of individual right as one of communal responsibility. And as citizens of that kingdom we submit ourselves to the law of love for God and for our neighbor.
Many thanks and blessings to each of you who
contributed to the Strengthening the Heartbeat of
the Church campaign. Your generous
gift, and the generosity of your fellow Catholics, helped to raise over $42.2
million for diocesan endowments, parish needs, Catholic Charities Maine,
Catholic schools and many other ministries. Throughout the year, you will be
hearing more about the campaign, the good people who supported it, and the good
work that is being done because of the faithfulness of Catholics across the
State.
For more information about
the campaign, please contact Patricia Long, diocesan director of development,
at 207-321-7835 or patricia.long@portlanddiocese.org.

WORSHIP & SPIRITUALITY
Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Laborers
for the Harvest
Reading 1: Isaiah (mother Zion)
Reading 2: Galatians (the cross, our true boast)
Gospel: Luke (the mission of the seventy-two)
Key Passage: Jesus said to the disciples, “Whenever you enter a town and they do
not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, “Even the dust of your town
that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. You know this: the
kingdom of God has come near.”
Questions to Ponder: What specific words in the readings tell us why the
Israelites and the disciples are to rejoice?
·
What has God done for
you that causes you to rejoice?
·
When have you been aware
of being an instrument of God’s saving power?
·
What hardships do you
face in sharing the Gospel with others?
·
Have you experienced any
joy for being a cause of change in others for the better?
·
Does this gospel story
call you to a certain ministry within your parish community?
SOCIAL JUSTICE & PEACE: Summer vacation time is here but the work of Catholic
Relief Services goes on because of your generosity. How do you spend a loan of
25 dollars? A group of 12 women living in Nicaragua formed a cooperative to
help them rent more land to grow coffee and other crops. CRS provided a new wet
mill, which is a machine that separates the coffee bean from the fruit pulp.
The women now have a growing business selling high quality Fair Trade organic
grown coffee., all because you took the time to fill the Operation Rice Bowl
during Lent.
