WEEKLY REFLECTION: Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

It is so easy and so human to put down, discriminate against, and even persecute those who do not share our beliefs and traditions. We are seldom inclined to listen to what they have to say or to try to understand where they are coming from. It is much easier to dismiss them as “evil” and treat them as an enemy. But look at the example Jesus gave us. He reached out to the very people his society saw as low-life, evil, and unredeemably sinful people. He talked with them, ate with them, and treated them with respect. He did not try to “convert” them but was simply present to them. How are you treating those who are outcasts in your world?

Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving,

and fulfill your vows to the Most High.

~Psalm 50:14

“STEWARDSHIP  -- A Disciple’s Way of Life!”

“It is love that I desire, not sacrifice,” says Hosea in this weekend’s first reading. But for love of us, Jesus sacrificed everything — even His life. Are my small sacrifices gifts of love and gratitude?

(From Stewardship By The Book, by Sharon Hueckel.  Used with permission.)

Commentary:

What makes a gift “small” or “big”? Is it the size? the amount? the need it meets? It is none of these things.  Rather, it is the spirit in which the gift is offered. A gift is “big” when it is given to show our thanks to God for His limitless gifts; when it is proportional to our means; and when it is intended to move the giver closer to Jesus. One dollar is a big gift from someone who has only two dollars but is grateful for what he has; a thousand dollars is a small gift from someone who has a million but wants to keep it for himself.

MISSION BASKET FOR JUNE

The Archdiocese for the Military Services is responsible for the spiritual welfare of Catholics serving in our Armed Forces, their family members, patients in VA Medical Centers and U.S. Government personnel serving overseas – a total of more than 1.5 million souls! We receive no financial support from the U.S. Government and must rely on donations from the Catholic Community to provide pastoral care to our faithful members.

We need to increase the number of priests to serve Catholics in the military, and encourage young men to pursue a priestly vocation for all our dioceses through Discernment Weekends. Last year we had more than 70 young participate in such spiritual seminars.

In the meantime, we have developed and implemented a ministry entitled Catholics Seeking Christ (CSC) .CSC is a young adult peer-to-peer ministry designed to “keep the Faith alive” among our young Catholic military members when there is no priest available to them. Maintaining spiritual sustenance for our military members is essential, but these ministries are not inexpensive.

Please be as generous as you can. Thank You!

CYCLES

OF FAITH

10th Sunday in

Ordinary Time

It has been about 2,000 years since Jesus first called his disciples to follow him, a time when his Jewish society was essentially divided into two groups-those who followed each and every law of the faith and those who weren't so attentive to it. Today, we seem to have developed a knack for dividing ourselves among many other stark and diverse groups, whether it be wealth, politics, ethnicity, or religious affiliation, to name just a few.

Matthew was a tax collector, and before Jesus called him, he was considered a part of the society of sinners in the eyes of the religious leaders. So why did Jesus call him, and not one of those who obeyed every law of the Jewish faith? Why did he sit down with Matthew and others who needed guidance in their lives? Very simply, as Jesus put it, one does not see a physician if one is healthy. So too are we called to sit down with Jesus.

Matthew, and the others who followed Jesus, did what the Catechism calls "a radical reorientation of [his] whole life, a return, a conversion to God with all [his] heart" (CCC 1431). Because it is just not enough to say we are sorry for our past sins, the sacrament of reconciliation calls us to begin with a fresh dedication to living our lives each and every moment with the grace of God. Doing so, we will end worldly divisions and achieve the mercy he desires for us.

Worship & Spirituality

Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gospel of Matthew

In Matthew’s gospel we are hearing about the early ministry of Jesus.

1st Reading: Hosea: The prophet specifies that it is love and knowledge of God that is necessary and not empty practices.

2nd Reading: Romans: Paul speaks about the faith of Abraham & Sarah.

Gospel: The calling of Matthew the tax collector.

Key Passage: As Jesus was sitting at dinner in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples.

Questions to ponder: Adult: How does the fact of Jesus’ dining with sinners challenge you? Are we judgmental regarding others? Why were Jesus’ meals with sinners so troubling to people? What message was Jesus making by these meals? Do you come to the Eucharist in the hope of mercy and healing?

Child: Who in your class or neighborhood could you help feel more welcome and accepted?

The Ministry of Altar Serving: We welcome and ask God’s blessing upon our new altar servers: Kevin Powers, Ryan Bickler and Andrew Mills. All three boys attend the Faith Formation program here at St. Maximilian. We are proud that they will serve at the Table of the Lord.
