WEEKLY REFLECTION

23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

"If any one comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple." - Lk 14:26-27

As children we dream of what we will do in the future. As adults, our focus turns to the present – how we will provide for ourselves and our families and the mundane needs of the day. It is so easy to get caught up in the daily struggles that we forget about our dreams and goals. As disciples, our goal should be to become more Christ-like, to love more genuinely, and to use all we have to build up the community. That requires reflection, conscious effort, and renewed commitment. What can you do to keep your focus on this goal?

Dear Saint Max 2010 First Communion Families,

What better way to get to know who is sitting next to you in the pew each week – here’s a way to finally put a name to a face! We are putting together a cluster directory, our parish family directory won’t be complete without you and your family in it - Please sign up today! Photo sessions are filling up. Every family that participates will get their own free parish directory.

Photographers from Olan Mills will be at St. Max September 14th – 15th, and September 22nd – 25th. Gather your family together, and book a date for a free family photo. The option to purchase additional photo packages will also be offered – so here’s a great opportunity to get the Christmas family Photo card done too! Registration is easy – you may either sign up after mass at the table in the narthex or on-line by following these simple steps:

1.      http://signup.olanmills.com

2.      Select “New appointment Schedule new appointment”/enter

3.      On left: enter church phone number 207-883-0334, on Right, enter your photography/church member information/enter

4.      Above the calendar, click on the month that you’d like, then choose the day and the time slot./enter

If you would like to have your photo taken, but none of the St. Max dates work for you, there’s good news! You may go to any of the cluster parishes, and may also register on-line. Here are the photography dates of the other cluster parishes:

St. Bartholomew:  9/28 – 10/2. PH:  207-799-5528

St. Johns: 9/7 – 9/11. PH: 207-772-7489

Note: you may follow the steps above for on-line sign up, however, in step 3, you must enter the corresponding parish phone number.

If you would be so kind as to forward this e-mail onto your Saint Max friends, and encourage them to sign up too that would be greatly appreciated.

CYCLES OF FAITH

Twenty-Third Sunday in

 Ordinary Time

Labor Day weekend doesn't appear as a celebration in the cycle of the church year. But Monday's holiday does affect a lot of what many people do this weekend. For some, three days off means the opportunity for a short trip out of town. Others may schedule a vacation for the week before to take advantage of the extra day off. Grocery stores have sales, highlighting products that can be consumed at picnics or prepared on outdoor grills. A holiday honoring labor becomes the effective end of summer for most folk.

Labor shows up in some interesting ways in the Scriptures for this weekend. The only time in the three-year Lectionary cycle that we read from Paul's Letter to Philemon comes this week. Paul is sending back Philemon's slave, Onesimus, who had run away. In the interim, Onesimus has become a Christian and, from Paul's view, a brother in the Lord to Philemon. So what is Philemon to do with this worker that he had owned? How was he to act?

The Gospel includes a description of the work of building a tower. Jesus compares the calculation of the work involved to that taking up the cross and being a disciple. When Philemon became a Christian he may not have understood that his life might change radically-that he was expected to deal in a new way with one of his slaves who became a Christian. At Paul's insistence, Philemon's adherence to the faith was requiring that he act differently from the society in which he lived. We are confronted with the same situation as Philemon. In the workplace, in the market, in our leisure, and while on vacation, we are called to adhere to the faith just as we do in church on Sunday. That is the real work we have, and it is not always an easy job. We don't have to carry Jesus' cross, but we do have to carry our own.

FOOD CUPBOARD: Due to the huge increase in people we are seeing at the Cupboard each week, we are starting our "fundraising" events now. Once again, Macy's is having their "Shop for a Cause" Saturday on October 16, 2010. Those who participated in this know that the savings on items on that day is worthwhile, and the cost of the ticket is only $5.00. The Food Cupboard keeps the $5.00 ! Last year we raised $2,044. This year we would like to double or triple that amount. Even if you do not shop on that day, you have a chance to win a $500 gift card. Anyone wanting to help us with ticket sales, please call the FC @874-0379.

This fiscal year started out with a bang. This month, we shared food with 590 men, women, and children; an increase of 253 from last August. In July our increase was 318, over July 2009. Their needs are real, lost jobs, homes, and self esteem.

Your help with either monetary donations or food items are sorely needed: always Chicken Noodle Soup, Apple or Grape jelly, Tuna Fish, Baked Beans, and Mac & Cheese. Thank you!

NEW!!! “YOUNG PEOPLE’S CHOIR”!

If you like to sing, want to find some new friends, and are 6-14 years old, you might want to think about joining the Young People's Choir of St. Maximilian Kolbe Church. Our choir practices are going to be held on Tuesdays, from 4-5 PM in the Music Room, #7. Our first practice is going to be on September 21, 2010. Please drop off and pick up your child at the side door near Highland Avenue.

Please, contact Kathy Sparda if you are interested. Come and join a wonderful singing group of friends. Young People's Choir is going to sing on Saturdays' 4:30 Masses, twice in a month.

BRIDGE CLUB: The monthly Bridge Club will take place on Wednesday, September 8th from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm in the Small Parish Hall. Bring your own lunch; coffee & tea and desserts will be provided. All are welcome. FMI, call Ellie McKeon @ 885-9466.

Christ has no body now but yours

No hands, no feet on earth but yours

Yours are the eyes through which He looks Compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which He walks to do good. Yours are the hands with which He blesses all the world. Yours are the hands. Yours are the feet. Yours are the eyes. You are His body. Christ has no body now on earth but yours.

-Prayer of St. Theresa

How will you act today for Christ?
